New Call for Centres of Excellence for HPC Applications

A new call has been launched by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking to select and support Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in HPC to adapt applications in anticipation of the transition towards exascale and post-exascale performance.

Building on and complementing previous calls for Centres of Excellence, the EuroHPC has launched a new call for CoEs to prepare applications for the exascale era.

The selected CoEs are tasked with implementing concrete actions to increase the performance of HPC applications and exploit the capabilities of exascale and post exscale computing. The objective will be to either develop application codes or scale up existing ones towards these advanced levels of performance, resulting in tangible benefits mainly for scientific challenges.

Adapting applications to exascale and future post-exascale performance represents a significant undertaking which requires significant changes to application codes, in some cases involving a complete rethink or substantial code re-engineering and rewrite.

More details

This call HORIZON-EUROHPC-JU-2023-COE-03 is open for submissions until 9 January 2024, 17:00 (CET).

Applications are invited to identify one of the following Exascale Lighthouse application areas:

  • Personalised Medicine/ Digital Twin of the human body;
  • Human Brain research & neurological disorders;

Only one proposal will be selected per application area identified above and a maximum total of two proposals will be selected as a result of this call.

The call is funded by Horizon Europe, the EU funding programme for research and innovation with an EU contribution up to EUR 2.5 million per project.

The participation to this call is limited to legal entities established in Member States and legal entities established in countries associated to Horizon Europe that are members of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. Proposals including entities established in countries outside the scope specified in the call/topic/action will be ineligible.

The selected projects are expected to start on 1 July 2024 for a period of 30 months.

More details and all relevant documents concerning the call are available on the EU Funding & tender opportunities portal and in the EuroHPC JU website

Background

This topic builds on and complements the HORIZON-EUROHPC-JU-2021-COE-01-01: Centres of Excellence preparing applications in the Exascale era.

Proposals should ensure collaboration with other Centres of Excellence for HPC applications, and other national and EU funded activities that focus on similar or complementary objectives for HPC codes and applications, in order to maximise the synergies and optimise such codes and applications for current and future architectures of EuroHPC supercomputers. This includes participation in the common continuous integration and deployment platform developed by CoEs selected in call HORIZON-EUROHPC-JU-2021-COE-01 and the associated Coordination and Support Action CASTIEL 2.
