As of today, students can apply to EUMaster4HPC, the first pan-European Master of Science (MSc) programme in High Performance Computing (HPC). Funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, the MSc programme will link academic excellence to the current and future challenges of European businesses, industry and the public sector in the multidisciplinary field of HPC.  The modular curriculum and partnership with the European HPC industry will provide students with distinct qualifications and outstanding career prospects in the rapidly expanding field of HPC.

From September 2022, eight European universities will offer EUMaster4HPC courses to a first cohort of 50 students. The eight universities are the following:  University of Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany), Sorbonne Université (France), Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski (Bulgaria), Università della Svizzera Italiana (Switzerland), Kungliga Tekniska Hoegskolan (Sweden).

By bringing together major players in HPC education in Europe, EUMaster4HPC will offer the most talented students a coordinated pan-European curriculum at the frontier of digital technology in areas such as the design, deployment, operation, and/or the use of current and future generation HPC and HPC-related technologies in Europe.

EUMaster4HPC emphasises collaboration across Europe with innovative teaching paradigms such as co-teaching and strong connections with the industry and leading experts in HPC education. The focus on academic excellence in collaboration with a broad community of European stakeholders will provide young talents with the competences and knowledge to address the challenges of the European HPC ecosystem in the transition towards a “Digital Europe”.

This unique pan-European curriculum will provide a coordinated approach to HPC education and training in Europe that could be adopted by other universities. The creation of a European network of HPC specialists will strengthen mobility and mutual support between students, teachers and industrial experts. A particular focus on mobility of students and teachers will enable students to rapidly gain experience through internships and exposure to European supercomputing centres.

Background

The EUMaster4HPC consortium is led by the University of Luxembourg and composed of European universities, research/supercomputing centres and industrial partners. It has been selected following the call for proposals EuroHPC-2020-03 “Training and Education on HPC”.

With a total budget of EUR 7 million, the consortium will develop and implement a joint curriculum in HPC across Europe and create a collaborative network strengthening the European HPC ecosystem and accelerating the uptake of HPC in academia and industry. This action is part of the EuroHPC JU’s broader strategy to widen the use of HPC infrastructures and support the development of key HPC skills, education and training for European science and industry.
