The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking launches three new R&I projects: EoCoE-III, POP3 and HPC SPECTRA

These new research and innovation projects will focus on fostering the adaptation of applications to exascale and future post-exascale performance, ensuring the efficient use of HPC infrastructures and on the training of European HPC users.

2024 r&i

EoCoE-III

The project EoCoE-III (Energy-oriented Centre of Excellence for Exascale HPC applications) applies cutting-edge computational methods in its mission to foster the transition to decarbonized energy in Europe. The present project will draw the experience of two successful previous projects EoCoE-I and EoCoE-II, where a set of diverse computer applications from four energy domains achieved significant efficiency gains thanks to its multidisciplinary expertise in applied mathematics and supercomputing. During this 3rd round, EoCoE-III will channel its efforts into 5 exascale lighthouse applications optimising energy consumption and covering the key domains of energy materials, water, wind and fusion.

The project EoCoE-III will have a duration of 3 years, with a total budget of €5.998.791,25 provided by Horizon Europe.

The project gathers a consortium of 18 complementary partners from 6 countries that will form a unique network of expertise in energy science, scientific computing and HPC.

POP3

The project POP3 (Performance Optimization and Productivity 3) mainly focuses on performance assessments with the goal of evaluating code performance and scaling, identifying the main sources of inefficiency and providing some insight and recommendation about how to improve it. POP3 also provides second level services that have been extended and include proof of concepts, energy efficiency and advisory studies The project is articulated in 3 main pillars: services, users, and co-design. The project POP3, which will run for a 3-year period with a total funding of €5.996.896,25 from Horizon Europe, gathers 8 partners from different countries.

HPC SPECTRA

HPC SPECTRA is a project that aims to implement the EuroHPC JU’s training strategy by developing an innovative EuroHPC Training Platform and co-organising the 2024 and 2025 International HPC Summer Schools (IHPCSS). These initiatives will support the training of European HPC users which is of utmost importance in maximising exploitation of the highly ambitious investments in research and infrastructure as part of the EuroHPC JU roadmap.

The HPC SPECTRA consortium is made up of three universities and three strong research centres from five different countries. The project will run for a period of 24 months. The total budget of the project is €1.999.798,97 and is funded by Digital Europe Programme (DEP).

More details

EoCoE-III and POP3 emerge from the same call on centres of excellence for exascale HPC applications, HORIZON-EUROHPC-JU-2023-COE-01.

The project HPC SPECTRA is the result of the call DIGITAL-EUROHPC-JU-2022-TRAINING-02.

Background

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is a legal and funding entity created in 2018 to enable the European Union and EuroHPC participating countries to coordinate their efforts and pool their resources with the objective of making Europe a world leader in supercomputing.

In order to equip Europe with a world-leading supercomputing infrastructure, the EuroHPC JU has already procured nine supercomputers, located across Europe. No matter where in Europe they are located, European scientists and users from the public sector and industry can benefit from these EuroHPC supercomputers, which rank among the world’s most powerful.

In parallel, the EuroHPC JU is funding an ambitious research and innovation projects to develop a full European supercomputing supply chain: from processors and software to applications to be run on these supercomputers and know-how to develop strong European HPC expertise.
