MeluXina: a new EuroHPC world-class supercomputer in Luxembourg

The procurement contract of MeluXina, new EuroHPC supercomputer, has been signed by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), LuxProvide, the hosting entity, and the company Atos, the selected vendor.

Mr. Anders Dam Jensen, the EuroHPC Executive Director met today Mr. Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Mr. Franz Fayot, Minister of the Economy of Luxembourg and Mr. Pascal Bouvry and Mr. Roger Lampach, the CEOs of LuxProvide during a press conference to celebrate the signature of the contract and the start of the operational phase.

Mr. Jensen stated:

"This signature marks a significant milestone in EuroHPC's operations, bringing us one step closer to our ambition of making Europe a global leader in high performance computing. By early next year, the MeluXina supercomputer will boost European innovation and competitivity, and support European researchers and industry, wherever they are in Europe. But MeluXina also has a very particular significance for us as it is the first of several EuroHPC contract signatures and this supercomputer will be located in Luxembourg, the participating country hosting the EuroHPC headquarters!"

MeluXina will be a petascale supercomputer, capable of executing more than 10 Petaflops, 10 million billion calculations per second and powered by green energy from a cogeneration plant powered by waste wood. This new supercomputing system is expected to be operational early 2021 and will rank in the world's top 30 supercomputers. MeluXina is funded via a joint investment of about EUR 30 million from the European Union and Luxembourg.

Its objective is to foster better science and enhance innovation in Europe by providing access to leading edge HPC infrastructures and services to a wide range of users from the research and scientific community as well as the industry and the public sector. This new supercomputer will support the development of leading scientific, public sector and industrial applications in many domains, including artificial intelligence, personalised medicine, bio-engineering, weather forecasting, fight against climate change, drug and material design.

Background

The compagny Atos has been selected following the call for tender launched in January 2020 for the acquisition, delivery, installation and maintenance of a Petascale supercomputer located in LuxProvide's data center in Bissen, Luxembourg.

The computing power of MeluXina will soon be complemented by four additional EuroHPC petascale supercomputers to be built in the following supercomputing centres:
