Two New EuroHPC JU Calls to Boost HPC Skills and Support in Europe

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is launching two new calls to further enhance Europe’s leadership in HPC and related technologies by supporting training, skills development, and National Competence Centres.

IHPCSS & NCC

Support to the International HPC Summer School

Through this call, HORIZON-EUROHPC-JU-2025-IHPCSS-02, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking will ensure sustained European participation in the International HPC Summer School (IHPCSS), by providing financial and organisational support for at least four editions of the summer school between 2026 and 2029. The call aims to facilitate the annual participation of up to 40 early-career researchers from EuroHPC JU participating states and ensure the active involvement of European tutors, mentors, and experts in both the delivery and the governance of the school.

Building on longstanding experience, the IHPCSS aims to deliver high-quality, multidisciplinary training in HPC and quantum technologies to PhD students and early-career postdoctoral researchers. The initiative seeks to foster international collaboration, promote diversity and inclusion, and enhance the global visibility of European HPC expertise.

The total indicative budget available for this call is EUR 1,000,000, funded under the Horizon Europe programme. The expected project duration is four years. The call opens today, 1 July 2025, with a submission deadline of 2 October 2025 at 17:00 CET (Brussels time).

National Competence Centres (NCCs) for HPC

With this call, DIGITAL-JU-EUROHPC-2025-NCC-01, the EuroHPC JU aims to support an existing European network of National Competence Centres for HPC (NCCs) and the establishment of new NCCs in additional EuroHPC JU participating states.

These centres act as national hubs of HPC expertise across Europe, delivering tailored services including training, consulting, and access to advanced HPC resources. The primary focus is on supporting SMEs, industry, and public administrations to foster innovation and enhance HPC uptake.

The networking and coordination of the NCCs at the European level is essential for ensuring effective collaboration, sharing of best practices, and the harmonisation of services across the network. To this end, the call supports the development of a centralised platform that will streamline services, promote excellence, organise training activities, and enable knowledge exchange. This coordination will create synergies between the NCCs and related initiatives such as the EuroHPC AI FactoriesCentres of Excellence, and European Digital Innovation Hubs, thus maximising the overall impact of the EuroHPC ecosystem in Europe.

The call encompasses two topics:

  • DIGITAL-JU-EUROHPC-2025-NCC-01-01: National Competence Centres for High Performance Computing
  • DIGITAL-JU-EUROHPC-2025-NCC-01-02: Networking and coordination of National HPC Competence Centres

Although the call details are already available online, the call itself will officially open for submission at the end of the month, with a submission deadline of 30 September 2025 at 17:00 CET. The total indicative budget for this call is EUR 42 million, including an EU contribution of EUR 22 million from the Digital Europe Programme, with the remainder provided by the EuroHPC Participating States.

Background

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is a legal and funding entity created in 2018 to enable the European Union and EuroHPC JU participating countries to coordinate their efforts and pool their resources with the objective of making Europe a world leader in supercomputing.

In order to equip Europe with a world-leading supercomputing infrastructure, the EuroHPC JU has already procured ten supercomputers, located across Europe. Three of these EuroHPC supercomputers are now ranked among the world’s top 10 most powerful supercomputers: Jupiter in Germany ranks at 4, becoming Europe’s new fastest Supercomputer along with LUMI in Finland (9th place) and  Leonardo in Italy (10th place). Through the EuroHPC Access Calls, European scientists and users from the public sector and industry can benefit from these EuroHPC supercomputers, which rank among the world’s most powerful.

Currently, the EuroHPC JU is also overseeing the implementation of 13 AI factories across Europe that offer free, customised support to SMEs and startups. These comprehensive open AI ecosystems centred around EuroHPC supercomputing facilities are supporting the growth of a highly competitive and innovative AI ecosystem in Europe.

The EuroHPC JU is also deploying a European Quantum Computing infrastructure, integrating diverse European quantum computing technologies with supercomputers. In June 2025, the EuroHPC JU inaugurated PIAST-Q in Poznań, Poland, the first EuroHPC quantum computer to be inaugurated, marking a milestone in Europe’s leap into the quantum era.

In parallel, the EuroHPC JU is investing in research and innovation projects to develop a full European supercomputing supply chain: from processors and software to applications to be run on these supercomputers and know-how to develop strong European HPC expertise.
