The project proposes to carry out simulations of the plasma dynamics in the boundary region of single-null discharges performed in the TCV tokamak. Based on a two-fluid model for the plasma and a kinetic model for the neutral particles, these simulations are enabled by the GBS code.

By using a state-of-the-art validation methodology and leveraging a set of experimental measurements allowed by recent diagnostics upgrades, the simulations will be validated against TCV experimental results. Through dedicated parameter scans and the comparison with TCV, the simulations we propose will assess our understanding of the complex processes occurring in the tokamak boundary of single-null configurations in detachment conditions.

Ultimately, we will lay solid foundations to the development of the understanding of the physics mechanisms behind plasma detachment, providing a fundamental contribution to the operation and design of future fusion devices.
