The project aims to perform the first simulation of a wave energy farm using high-fidelity numerical modelling to anticipate the effects of arraying wave energy converters (WECs) within the same sea stretch.

Energy performance will be investigated considering an optimization procedure to select the best configuration in terms of inter-device distance and arrangement. Point-absorber WECs with a linear power take-off system are considered and their global power output is considered as the parameter to be maximized.

The farm will be simulated within a single process using DualSPHysics, which can perform large scale simulations on HPC systems.

By leveraging the unprecedented computational power provided by the LUMIGPU partition, wave farms comprising more than 200 units, under four sea states representative of the site, with 25 array configurations, will be solved considering 26 billion computational nodes each, generating the biggest fluid simulations ever run so far.
